Football betting explained

Bets on football matches are placed on regular time (90 minutes). Time added to regular time by match officials is known as additional or injury time. Extra time (two extra halves of 15 minutes each) in Cup matches is not the same as injury time and is not taken into account unless otherwise specified.

For example, a bet is placed on team 1 winning a match in the ¼ finals. At the end of the match (0-0), the referee signalled for extra time (two extra halves of 15 minutes), during which team 1 scored a goal in the 120th minute. The bet on Team 1 winning loses because regular time ended with the score 0:0 (draw). In this example, a bet placed on Team 1 to qualify for the semi-final would have won (a "Qualify" bet).

Goals, substitutions and other match events that take place during injury time are classed as having taken place during regular time.

  • In the first half, injury time begins after the 45th minute.
  • In the second half, injury time begins after the 90th minute.

For example, in the 90th minute, the score is 0:0. 5 minutes of injury time are added to regular time. The home team scores in the 5th added minute. The bet is settled on the basis of the match ending with a score of 1:0 with the goal scored in the 90th minute.

* Football matches can also be in the following formats:

  • 2 halves of 40 minutes;
  • 2 halves of 35 minutes;
  • 2 halves of 30 minutes;
  • 2 halves of 25 minutes.

Bets placed on either team to win with a handicap. Handicaps can be less than, greater than or equal to zero. In order to determine the result of the bet for actual goals made by the team on which the bet is placed, the handicap is subtracted (if the handicap is negative) or added (if positive) for the selected team (the handicap for the second team is not taken into account). If the result of the match is in favour of the selected team, the bet wins. If the match ends in a draw, all bets are subject to return.

For example, if the bet is placed on Team 1 with a negative handicap of -1, and the match ends:

a) with a score of 0:0, then the bet is lost;

b) with a score of 1:0, then the bet is subject to push;

c) with a score of 2:0, then the bet is won.

If the bet is placed on Team 1 with a positive handicap of +0.5, and the match ends:

a) with a score of 0:1, then the bet is lost;

b) a final score of 0:0, 1:0, 2:0, etc., then the bet wins.

Bets placed on the outcome of the 1st half and final score — "Half Time/Full Time." With "Half Time/Full Time" bets, you must correctly predict the outcome of the first half and the final score. In the Pre-match section, letters are used to indicate these selections:

  • W — win;
  • D — draw.

The first place is the selection of the 1st half, and the second is the match. The selection of the second period has no significance for the settlement of the bet.

For example,

  • if the match ends 1:1, but the first half ended 1:0, then the selection "W1D" wins.
  • if the match ends 1:0, but the first half ended 0:0, then the selection "DW1" wins.
  • if the match ends 1:0, but the first half ended 1:0, then the selection "W1W1" wins.

Reference letter examples of "Half time/Full time" bet selections:

  • W1W1 — the home team leads after the 1st half and wins the match;
  • DW1 — there is a draw after the 1st half and the home team wins the match;
  • W2W1 — the away team leads after the 1st half and the home team wins the match
  • W1D — the home team leads after the 1st half and the match ends in a draw;
  • DD — there is a draw after the 1st half and the match ends in a draw;
  • W2D — the away team leads after the 1st half and the match ends in a draw;
  • W1W2 — the home team leads after the 1st half but loses the match;
  • DW2 — there is a draw after the 1st half and the away team wins the match;
  • W2W2 — the away team leads after the 1st half and wins the match.

For all bets associated with the number of player warnings, the sending-off of players is not taken into account. If a player is dismissed for two yellow cards, one is counted.

Cards received by substitutes, reserve players, trainers, or other individuals not participating in the match are not counted.

Cards shown after the final whistle are also not counted. Cards shown during the half-time interval are considered shown in the second half.

For example, in the match, three yellow cards were received by the home team, and four yellow cards were received by the away team. One of the away team's players was shown a second yellow card and was sent off. In this case, for bet settlement purposes, the result for the total number of yellow cards is counted as 3:3 and 'sending-off' occurred.

Bets on player metrics

When settling bets on player statistics, the following events are considered to have occurred:

  • corner kick – there was an official corner kick taken from the corner marker;
  • goal kick – there was an official goal kick taken from the appropriate place in the penalty area;
  • out – there was an official throw-in made from off the pitch after the ball was declared 'out';
  • offside – there was an official free kick awarded after an offside call;
  • foul — in the event an actual foul is determined (referee whistle).

For example, after the goalkeeper performed a goal kick, the ball went out of play on the touchline and the referee blew the final whistle. It is considered that a goal kick was the final match event to occur.

For example, the ball rolled out of play behind the goal line off a player from the defending team, and the referee blew the final whistle. A corner kick is not considered to have taken place.

Bets placed on a player's statistical (or other) indicators are subject to push, if said player is not included in the starting lineup.

Bets on an event that will happen to the player earlier. A list of events that can happen to the player indicated in the bet during the match is offered.

Bets placed on a player are pushed, if said player is not included in the starting lineup.

The bet "Will play entire match" wins only if the player plays the entire match and NONE of the other listed events happen to the player (no goals scored, no yellow cards received, etc.).

A "Will play entire match" bet will only win if the goalkeeper plays the entire match and none of the other specified events happen: they do not concede a goal, do not receive a yellow card, do not save a penalty, are not replaced, etc.

If the goalkeeper is substituted, then all "What will happen first" bets placed on them will be subject to push.

Bets on "How the first goal will be scored". Bets on the player who will score the first goal with the following outcomes:

  • "From a penalty" — a direct shot from the penalty zone (without assistance);
  • "From a free kick" — a direct shot from a set piece (other players can touch the ball provided the goal is recorded as scored by the player who took the free kick);
  • "From a header" — a goal scored with the head (provided it is not an own goal);
  • "From an own goal" — a goal scored by a player in their own net (if the match report lists the goalscorer as a player of the team that conceded the goal);
  • "In open play (excluding headers)" — a goal scored by any other method.

If the match ends with a final score of 0:0, the bet loses.

Example:

A free kick was taken, but a second player (or the goalkeeper) touched the ball before it crossed the goal line. If the scorer is listed in the match report as:

  • the player who took the free kick — in this case, the goal is considered to have been scored "Via a free kick"
  • a different player from the scoring team if the ball touched their head — this is classified as a goal scored "Via a header", otherwise "In open play (not via a header)"
  • a player from the team that conceded the goal; in this case, the goal is considered to have been scored "Via an own goal".

Bets on the time an event will occur. Bets on the time an event from the offered list will occur. Options: the time of the first goal, the time the first yellow card is shown, etc. The bet will win if the minute (excluding seconds) at which the specified event will occur is specified correctly.

For example:

the time of the first goal will be determined as follows:

  • if scored with a match time of 00 minutes 10 seconds – the goal was scored in the "1st minute"
  • if scored with a match time of 04 minutes 10 seconds – the goal was scored in the "5th minute"
  • if scored with a match time of 05 minutes 00 seconds – the goal was scored in the "6th minute"

Bets on events of the first 3 minutes of the match. If the match is interrupted during the first 3 minutes for reasons unrelated to the sporting event (weather, spectator interference, technical failures, etc.), all bets on events of the first 3 minutes (touching the ball by the goalkeeper, foul, out, etc.) are pushed.

Bets on the outcome and total goals in the match. Bets will win if the outcome of the match and number of goals scored are indicated correctly.

Note. Total – the total number of match events (headers, corners, yellow cards shown, etc.) predicted with the options "more than" (">") or "less than" ("<") in relation to the number of anticipated events set by the Betting Company.

For example:

  • a bet on "Team 1 to win with total goals scored < 2.5" wins if team 1 wins the game with a final score of 1:0 or 2:0;
  • a bet on "Team 1 to win with total goals scored < 2,5" loses if team 1 wins with a final score of 2:1, or in the event of a draw or loss, as in each of these cases more than >2.5 goals would be scored in the match.

Bets on corner kicks from all 4 corners with the options "Yes" or "No". In Live, corners are counted in the comments box to the right of the current score and displayed as 0-0-0-0.

Explanation of corner count display:

  • at the start of the match, when no corner kicks have been taken from any of the four corners of the pitch, the corner count shows 4 zeros (0-0-0-0);
  • when a corner kick is taken from one of the corners of the pitch, the corresponding '0' in the corner count changes to 'X';
  • each '0' in the corner count corresponds to a specific corner of the football pitch.

The corners are designated from the viewpoint of the central stand, where the nearest left-hand corner is the first 0 in the corner count (X-0-0-0), then the further left-hand corner (0-X-0-0), the further right-hand corner (0-0-X-0), and finally the nearest right-hand corner (0-0-0-X).

Example 1:

At the end of the match, the corner kick score in the comments field is 0-X-X-X:

  • bets on "Corner kicks from all 4 corners — Yes" loses (since there was no corner kick from the left near corner)
  • bets on "Corner kicks from all 4 corners — No" wins (since there was no corner kick from one of the corners).

Example 2:

At the end of the match, the corner kick score in the comments field is X-X-X-X:

  • bets on "Corner kicks from all 4 corners — Yes" wins
  • bets on "Corner kicks from all 4 corners — No" loses

For example, the match ends with the following in the comments field: 0-X-X-X. Bets placed on "Corners Will Be Taken From All 4 Corner Flags - yes" lose, bets placed on "Corners Will Be Taken From All 4 Corner Flags - no" win.

The match ends with the following in the comments field: X-X-X-X. Bets placed on "Corners Will Be Taken From All Four Corner Flags - yes" win, bets placed on "Corners Will Be Taken From All Four Corner Flags - no" lose.

Bets placed on goals scored from set pieces. A goal is deemed to have been scored from a set piece if no more than two touches of the ball (including the initial one) were made by players of both teams from the moment the set piece was won to a goal being scored. A touch of the ball by the defending team's goalkeeper is not taken into account.

Note. A set piece is when the ball is kicked back into play after a corner, penalty or free kick. A penalty goal is considered a goal from a set piece.

Bets on penalty line goals. The line is considered part of the penalty zone.

Bets on a penalty shootout. In the settlement of these bets, team penalty shootouts are taken into account that are not interrupted by a penalty from the opposing team.

For example:

Bet "Team 1 scores 2 goals in a row". The bet wins if Team 1 scores 2 goals in a row without conceding a goal.

Additional information on counting own goals. When settling bets on "Via header" and "Via penalty", as well as other bets associated with individual and team statistics, own goals are not taken into account.

How bets involving Video Assistant Referee (VAR) are settled. The use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ("Video Review") during matches is confirmed by TV broadcasts after one of the following events:

  • the head referee gives the sign for a video review (a box drawn in the air);
  • the head referee went to check the incident on the on-pitch video review screen.

Note. The message "Goal Check" on the scoreboard, or the referee putting their hand to their ear, are not indications of an official video review. All other conversations between referees and their associates are also not considered official view reviews.

More on the official video review system (VAR)

Bets on the medical team entering the field. The medical team is only considered to have entered the field when the referee grants permission and the player receives assistance.

In the event of two medical teams being called to enter the field at the same time for different football teams by the head referee, such entrances are counted as one medical team entering the field.

Bet placed on goalkeeper touching the ball. The goalkeeper touching the ball involves the actual possession of the ball. If the goalkeeper touches the ball several times during possession, it is counted as one touch. Only touches of the ball by goalkeepers on the playing field are taken into account.

Example 1:

the goalkeeper caught the ball with his hands and kicked it onto the field. This is considered to be one touch.

Example 2:

the goalkeeper, while in possession of the ball, touched it three times with his foot and kicked it on the field. This is considered to be one touch.

Example 3:

the goalkeeper caught the ball with his hands, passed it, and received a return pass. In this case, two touches are counted, because the ball was in play after the first touch.

"The ball goes into the goal, but the goal will not be counted" bet. When settling the bet, non-playing moments are taken into account.

Example 1:

A fan ran out onto the field and scored a goal. The "The ball goes into the goal, but the goal will not be counted — Yes" bet wins.

Example 2:

After a goal and the game has been stopped, the goalkeeper kicked the ball in his own net. The "The ball goes into the goal, but the goal will not be counted — Yes" bet wins.

"Disallowed goal" bet. When settling the bet, goals during the game and goals cancelled by the referee are counted.

Example 1:

after a goal was scored, there was a VAR check and the goal was cancelled. The "Disallowed goal — yes" bet wins.

Example 2:

when the match is stopped after the whistle of a referee, etc., a player kicks the ball into the goal. The "Disallowed goal — yes" bet loses.

Example 3:

after a goal, the ball rolls out and a player kicks it back in. The "Disallowed goal — yes" bet loses.

Every Disallowed goal bet can be considered when The ball goes in the goal but the goal is not scored, but not vice versa.

Bet "Which team will score (concede) more (fewer) goals in the tournament", as well as bets on "Which group will score the most (least) number of goals" and "Which team will score the fastest goal (min.)" and "The national team will score (miss) the most (least) number of goals". These bets are settled taking into account extra time and excluding penalty shootouts. If two or more teams scored (missed) an equal number of goals (or two or more teams are equal in the bets "Which group will score the most (least) number of goals" or "Which team will score the fastest goal (min.)"), such bets lose.

For example:

the bet "Qatar will score more goals in the tournament – Yes" will lose if any other team scores the same number of goals.

"Predicted goals (xG)" bet. These bets are settled using absolute values (in hundredths). If they are a hit with the total, the bet is pushed.

"Number of goals scored in the 90th minute" bet. When settling this type of bet, goals scored from the 90th minute (89:01) until the end of regular time are counted. Injury time is taken into account.

"Latest goal in regular time (min.)" bet. When settling this type of bet, the sum of the regular time minutes and the minute when the goal was scored in injury time are counted.

Bet on the ball hitting the wall after a free kick. The bet will win if, after the free kick is taken, the ball touches any player who is part of the wall, regardless of their position (standing or lying down). Touching the ball is only counted if the ball hits the wall directly; preliminary ricochets off other players or objects are not taken into account. If a player runs out of the wall during a free kick and touches the ball, then such contact is not taken into account when settling bets on the ball hitting the wall after a free kick. Also, in the settlement of such a bet, touches of the ball by players who are not part of the wall at the time the free kick is taken are not taken into account.

Bets on goals of players in different roles. The roles of players are determined before the start of the match according to the official statement of the team posted on the official website of the tournament. The player's position specified in such sources is used when settling bets; the player's actual position on the field is not taken into account.

"The head coach or a substitute player will receive a yellow or red card" bet. When settling this bet, a yellow or red card shown to the head coach or selected substitute player is taken into account.

The bet will lose if a yellow or red card is shown to a starting player, even if they receive the card after being substituted after being on the bench.

Importance of the stream for settling bets. Bets on football are settled based on the main stream, including game replays, while information received from tactical cameras (wide shot cameras, etc.), amateur videos or video bloggers on stands, and other sources, are not taken into account.

Information regarding the calculation of the statistical indicators of football matches:

1. For settlement purposes, the following events are considered to have taken place when:

  • corner kick – there was an official corner kick from the corner marker;
  • goal kick – there was an official goal kick from the appropriate place in the penalty area;
  • out – there was an official throw-in from off the pitch after the ball was declared "out";
  • offside – there was an official free kick awarded after an offside call;
  • foul – there was an actual foul called by the referee (referee whistles);
  • the post or the crossbar (woodwork) – in the event that the ball hits the post of the crossbar and then remains in play (touched by a player or the referee, off the other post or crossbar, etc.). If the ball hits the goal post/crossbar then bounces onto another post/crossbar, only one post/crossbar hit is counted, if after the first hit the ball was not touched by a player or referee.

The ball hitting the post or crossbar will not be considered as a completed event if:

  • Play was stopped before the ball hit the post or crossbar;
  • Hitting the post or crossbar was committed in violation of the rules as assessed by a referee (foul, offside, etc.);
  • after hitting the post or crossbar, the ball went out of bounds without touching the field players (goalkeeper, referee), or went into the goal (a goal was awarded).

The total number of corner kicks, as well as the number of yellow and red cards shown in a football match is calculated as per the sources specified in the Rules, while the streams have unconditional priority over other sources when making decisions.

In the statistics, "Shots on target" and "Total shots" according to RunningBall and Betgenius are added to goals, while own goals are not counted. In the event of a foul in the penalty area and a subsequent penalty kick, the data from RunningBall is added to the total fouls, and the second kick is not considered a foul.

2. For bet settlement purposes related to the time of events, the time an event is recorded is considered:

  • out – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the ball leaves the pitch;
  • foul – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the referee blows their whistle to indicate a foul;
  • goal kick – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the goal kick is taken;
  • corner kick – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the corner is taken from the corner marker;
  • yellow/red card – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the head referee shows a yellow or red card to the offending player;
  • offside – by the time displayed on the scoreboard at the exact moment the free kick is taken after offside is called.

Attention! For intervals from the 41st to the 45th minute and from the 86th to the 90th minute, statistics are calculated without taking into account time added on to the first half of the match by the referee. In other words, when the timer reaches 45:00 and 90:00, the calculation of statistics finishes.

If the TV broadcast image is unclear or distorted by interference at the moment a corner kick is being taken, then the following will be regarded as indirect confirmation of the corner kick taking place (in order of priority):

  1. The head referee's signal.
  2. The linesman's signal.
  3. The position of the players at the time the corner kick is taken (players are standing near the posts).
  4. The commentary of in-stadium announcers.

If the TV broadcast image is unclear or distorted by interference at the moment a player is being shown a yellow or red card, then the following will be regarded as indirect confirmation of the yellow or red card being shown (in order of priority):

  1. Information available on sites from the list of
    sources of information.
  2. Information from official protocols.

Note. When settling bets, a retaken corner is considered one corner.

Bets on matchday statistics. The main types of bets on tour statistics (selections, handicaps and totals) are settled based on the total results of matches. Other bets on tour statistics are settled based on the wording (total result of matches or the total of selections for each match).

For example,

Bets on "Over 2.5 goals in 6 or more round matches" win if 3 or more goals are scored in each of these 6 matches.

Bets on "All matches over 2.5" win if more than 2.5 goals are scored in each round match.

In controversial situations which allow for more than interpretation of the event, the final decision is made by the Administration after taking into account the rules and general practice of bookmaking.
